What is sports and remedial massage?

Sports and remedial massage is targeted bodywork. The aim is simple: find what is tight, sore, or out of balance, and work on it directly. It is not a relaxation rub. You will feel pressure. You should feel better afterward.

Most clients come in for the same kinds of things: stiff necks from desks and phones, lower back tightness, sore shoulders from lifting kids or training, and the deep aches that come from running, surfing, or just getting older. Each session starts with a quick chat, then 50 minutes of focused hands-on work.

You do not need a referral. Most major health funds rebate remedial massage when delivered by a registered provider. Vaughan is registered, and your receipt will include the right provider details.

Who it helps

  • Weekend athletes

    Runners, surfers, gym-goers, team-sport players.

  • Desk-bound necks and shoulders

Long days at a screen, low-grade stiffness.

  • Lower back pain

Tight hips, weak glutes, the classic "sat too long" pattern.

  • Recovery between training

Faster bounce-back so you can train hard again sooner.

Techniques Vaughan uses

  • Deep tissue

Sustained pressure to release stuck layers of muscle and fascia.

  • Trigger point therapy

Targeted release of the knots that refer pain elsewhere.

  • Dry needling

Fine needles into trigger points to switch off the spasm.

  • Myofascial cupping

Negative-pressure cups that lift and decompress tissue.

  • Sports-specific work

Pre-event, post-event, and recovery between sessions.

  • Pregnancy-safe positioning

Side-lying, fully supported, suitable from second trimester onwards.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?
No referral needed. You can book directly online or call us.
What should I wear?
Whatever is comfortable. You will be draped properly through the session.
How often should I come in?
Most clients come in fortnightly while addressing a specific issue, then monthly for maintenance. Members tend to come in weekly.
Can I claim on my health fund?
Yes, if your level of cover includes remedial massage. We will give you a receipt with the right provider details to submit.
Is it painful?
There can be moments of discomfort, especially when working through a stubborn knot. It should never be unbearable. Tell us if it is too much, we adjust on the spot.
How is it different from a relaxation massage?
Relaxation is about calm and reset. Remedial is about targeted change. Same hands, very different approach.
Can I come in if I am pregnant?
Yes. We use side-lying, fully supported positioning that is suitable from the second trimester onwards. Always check with your obstetrician or midwife first, and let us know at booking.
